what WE need YOU to do for us

We need you to fill the role of SAFE Futures Fatherhood Specialist Intern. This is an unpaid internship. You’ll wow us by masterfully performing the following key duties and responsibilities:

  • Provides client focused services to Fathers and Father figures in order to reduce family risk and increase child safety in a variety of settings including: workshops/events, home visits, case management, community visits or sessions at one of the service facilities: The issues covered may include: child abuse/domestic violence prevention, expressing emotion, and maintaining healthy relationships. Provides resources and tools for child abuse prevention.
  • Instills trust and gains confidence within the organization, staff, community and clients through honesty integrity and authenticity.
  • Prepares accurate and timely paperwork utilizing web-based Apricot, including the following: case file documentation, service forms, monthly staff reports, and timesheets. Turns in adult client feedback forms and progress summaries on children as required. Documents client progress in case file. Prints, signs and files documents from Apricot in client’s paper file by the end of each month. All documentation must meet the standards of SafePlace policy and procedures and funding/grant requirements.
  • Uses individual supervision to increase self-awareness, process secondary trauma, and review client goals and curriculum to meet the needs of the clients.
  • Employs resourcefulness when working doing outreach to recruit clients, with current clients, and the community re: resources available, and problem solving when it concerns a need that the client or community has related to Fatherhood or domestic/sexual violence issues.
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of outreach, workshops and events to target populations in a manner that values differences and demonstrates cultural competence. Also, utilize outstanding interpersonal skills when completing the following services:
  • Meets with clients, in a group setting, to help teach fathering and connecting skills based from the Nurturing Fathers curriculum.  Utilizes immediate problem solving skills as needed.
  • Utilizes resiliency skills to rebound from setbacks related to program needs, goals and or client interaction, which at times can be challenging.
  • Makes good and timely decisions that keep the organization, client’s goals and other assigned tasks moving forward.
  • Multi-task with strong situational adaptability and a keen eye for optimizing work processes, even when the work seems repetitive in the following areas:
  • Screens and determines client eligibility for services.  Maintains required documentation for assistance programs.
  • Provides educational and informational classes to clients, in a group setting, which focus on fatherhood, family dynamics, and prevention, intervention and support services for families at risk.
  • Assist participants in acquiring skills necessary to maintain independent housing – includes budgeting, identifying and seeking needed resources, accessing training, life skills, as needed.
  • Maintains current information about local social service agencies; medical, legal, housing, transportation, financial support/funding options, crisis services, educational, employment, mental health, childcare, and others.
  • Provides information and referral services, and other advocacy services via telephone.
  • Participates in all required meetings/trainings.
  • Adheres to SAFE Alliance Confidentiality Policy and works with the Agency Mission and Statement of Values.
  • Complies with SAFE Alliances Standards of Conduct.
  • Communicates effectively.
  • Handles confidential information and has the ability to interact tactfully with employees at all levels concerning sensitive issues.
  • Responds appropriately to the cultural differences present among the organization's service population and staff.  Sensitive to various ethnic and social backgrounds, beliefs and values
  • Completes all requisite paperwork, for program and administration.
  • Works as a team member, providing support as well as constructive feedback in interpersonal interactions.
  • Meets for supervision scheduled between volunteer and supervisor.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
  • Fulfills the essential functions of the position.

to be successful in this role, WE’LL need YOU to

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree or working on obtaining a Master’s Degree in Social Work OR four years direct adult client experience required.
  • Experience in conducting outreach or education to men as well as the ability to facilitate group discussions.
  • Experience and/or education that pertain to working with children, with an understanding of child development required.
  • The Fatherhood Specialist will have knowledge about community resources, the criminal justice system and mental health issues preferred. 
  • Knowledge or background in the topics of sexual assault, domestic violence, poverty, and disabilities preferred. 
  • Experience conducting home visitation and assessment preferred. 
  • Understanding of family dynamics and experience conducting adult education preferred. 
  • Experience with supportive/peer counseling helpful.
  • Demonstrates appropriate skill level and capability in the operation of computers and general office software programs, including word-processing, spread-sheet, and database software, as required in your department.
  • Pays careful attention to detail; works with accuracy and maintain neat, well-organized records.
  • Works cooperatively with external partners and constituencies.
  • Maintains flexibility; working with frequent interruptions and multiple and changing priorities.
  • Demonstrates conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and dependable transportation.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and provide Department of Public Safety proof of driving record acceptable to agency insurers for safety issues.
  • Pass all required criminal history background checks (including an FBI fingerprint check), as well as submit to a pre-employment drug screen and TB test.
